There are many beautiful short walks and longer, more challenging tramps in the Karangahake Gorge.
Paeroa is involved with the Echo Walking Festival and each year run four or more fully guided walks in the area. These are a great way to get to know the walks along with some of the history and local features, as it is sometimes daunting to explore new tracks on your own, so this provides the comfort of being in a group. The whole Echo walking Festival comprises some 20 walks within the Coromandels to Kaimais and is run by a committee of sports and promotional representatives from each of the included areas. www.echowalkfest.org.nz
With the advent of the NZ Cycleways and our own already active Hauraki Rail Trail Trust, plans are afoot to extend the outdoors experience to be able to cycle or walk all the way through from Karangahake to Paeroa and eventually to the neighbouring centres as well.
Within the Paeroa township, there is a short but fairly steep walk up Primrose Hill to the monument where the view of the township and across the plains is quite spectacular.
We also have the blue chip walk which starts by the Criterion bridge and follows the stopbank beside the river to emerge at the back of the retail area. It’s name is derived from the colour of the Maratoto stone chip which has been used by Paeroa Rotary who constructed it, to pave the walkway. This will eventually be continued all the way through town along the railway embankment to the Historic Maritime Park nestled beside Puke Bridge. |
