The Karangahake Gorge bridles the Ohinemuri River to create the Southern Coromandel Corridor from Paeroa through to Waihi.
It boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the North Island with it’s sheer cliffs and lovely bush. This is all made very accessible to the public with various walking & tramping tracks only minutes from the State Highway.
There are several one hour circuits that take you through the relics of the mining days in the area or more adventurous walks up the mountain or deeper into the bush.
For those who are limited in time or energy, you can walk 2 minutes from the car park onto the first swing bridge to experience the power of the river as it sweeps beneath you and take in the majestic views of the Karangahake mountain and the Tokani. If you walk another five minutes, you can venture on to the next, smaller swing bridge and stand over the Waitawheta River looking in at the toe of the mountain. If you are into photography, this area will provide you with some great opportunities to take some spectacular shots.
When you have had your walk, you can relax with a glass of wine and a sumptuous platter at the Ohinemuri Winery or a great coffee and cake at the Talisman Café, before you head home or to one of the local accommodation choices here in the Gorge.
